SSD the King of Hard-drive

Looking forward for more fast, stable yet lowest redundancy in accessing file? Guess what? SDD (solid-state drive) is your best solution to eliminate redundancy, which mean no more RPM (Revolutions Per Minute)! No more hassle for your disk to spinning and looking for you file. I guess it is not too late to highlight and writing post about SSD as most of my friend still yet unknown about the existing of SSD.

I bought my own SSD around 3-4 months ago, yet my purpose was to do “experiment” on how truth the legend of SSD in Hard-Drive technology. The one I bought is Corsair Force Series GT SSD Drives, which in current market cost RM 745 (refer viewnet computer shop lowyat pricelist)  for 120 GB which the speed of write (555 Mbps) and read (515 Mbps) the fastest in the market beating their other competitor (Intel, Kingston, OCZ).

In order to utilize maximum speed, you need to use SATA3 capable motherboard (usually on latest motherboard such intel 2011 socket board), or otherwise your SSD speed will be capped to maximum capable supported by SATA2 speed.  Which mean, Force Series 3 SSDs have even quicker read and write times when they’re installed in PCs that use the latest SATA 3 6Gb/s interface.

Why did SSD faster than traditional Disk Drive? This is because SSD concept technology is the same as RAM + FlashDrive but with more larger capacity. Without any disk to spin, the file can easily being access by system randomly with more faster even without process of de-fragmenting disk.

An interactive video from Samsung that show comparison between Samsung SSD and HDD.

Some did a drop test on SSD, yet still can be use after dropped, compare to test drop of Disk-Drive (which disk inside it will defect). In term of speed, I personally test my boot-up speed time, SSD boot time may take 14-28 second, compare to previous Disk-Drive boot time around 1 minute 30 second or more. Moreover, accessing and rendering process using application such Photoshop, Movie Maker, AutoCad and SketchUp give different experience, not to mention my personal of playing game, it is wonderful time! :D

I am not yet testing to do raid on SSD yet, but I am sure it will be more faster than raid Disk-Drive (I used to raid-0 Disk-Drive, and the speed was nearly twice!) Therefore, after using it, the advantage of SSD compare to Disk-Drive that I can highlight

  • No Moving Part
  • Low Power Consumption
  • Silent Operation
  • Fast Access Time
  • Fast Exit / Hibernate / ShutDown / Boot
  • Fast Sustain Write / Read Speed
  • Light Weight

The disadvantages side of it compare to Disk-Drive :

  • High Cost Per GB (Pricey)
  • Very Low Capacity

Therefore, I am suggesting SSD to those who wanted top performance for  their personal computer or notebook. Drop you comment / suggestion or share your idea in comment box below. Thank you.
